A budget app without bank linking

Most budgeting apps ask you to connect your bank accounts through a third-party aggregator. That is convenient, but it means your transactions and credentials pass through someone else's servers. If you would rather keep your finances to yourself, there is another way to budget.

Why people skip bank linking

Privacy is the main reason. A linked account shares transaction history with the app's company and often an aggregator in between. Others have accounts the aggregators do not support, or simply do not want a connection that can break when a bank changes its login flow.

The trade-off is that you have to record transactions yourself. The good news is that this takes less effort than it sounds, and the act of logging spending is itself what makes people more aware of it.

How to log spending quickly without a bank feed

  • Type it in plain language. In Savings, Quick Add lets you write something like "coffee 4.50" and it picks the amount and a likely category.
  • Scan the receipt. Savings reads receipts on your device with Apple's Vision text recognition, so the photo is not uploaded to a server.
  • Use recurring transactions for rent, subscriptions and salary so they appear on schedule without any typing.
  • Add from your wrist or a widget when you are away from your phone: Savings has an Apple Watch app and home-screen widgets.

Where your data lives in Savings

Savings has no account system and no backend. Your transactions are stored locally on your device and, if you choose, synced between your own Apple devices through your own iCloud. The developer cannot see them.

The on-device AI features, such as receipt scanning, Quick Add parsing and the spending assistant, run on Apple's on-device models where your device supports them.

What you give up

You will not get automatic imports, and balances will not reconcile against your bank by themselves. If you need to see every account in one place with zero typing, a bank-linked app is the better fit. If you want a clear picture of where your money goes and a monthly saving score, without sharing credentials, manual tracking works well.
