A 50/30/20 budget app for iPhone

The 50/30/20 rule is one of the simplest budgeting frameworks: split your after-tax income into needs, wants and savings. It is easy to remember, but it only works if you can see how your real spending compares with the plan.

What 50/30/20 means

These are starting points, not laws. If rent takes more than half your income where you live, adjust the split. What matters is that you choose one and measure against it.

  • 50% for needs: housing, groceries, utilities, transport, minimum debt payments.
  • 30% for wants: dining out, entertainment, hobbies, subscriptions you could live without.
  • 20% for savings: emergency fund, investing, and paying debt down faster.

Setting it up in Savings

The Budget tab in Savings is built around a Needs / Wants / Savings plan. You set the split for your billing cycle, and every transaction category counts toward one of the three groups, so you can see where each month stands without maintaining a spreadsheet.

You can start your cycle on payday instead of the first of the month, which keeps the numbers aligned with when money actually arrives.

Reading your results

The Dashboard summarizes the cycle with a saving score, category breakdowns and trends. The score rises as you spend less than you earn and stick to the plan, which makes it easy to tell at a glance whether this month is on track.

If a cycle has no income logged yet, Savings shows projected and scheduled amounts instead of a misleading red deficit.

Tips for making it stick

  • Log transactions the day they happen. Quick Add and receipt scanning keep this under ten seconds.
  • Review once a week, not once a month, so you can adjust early.
  • Automate the savings part first: schedule a recurring transfer to savings on payday.
  • Revisit the split every few months as income and priorities change.
